Hey mamas!!! Are Timbaland’s lyrics still ringing in your head? Smiles. I know. I’m singing it as I type. I’ve been fighting a massive cold for two weeks. I, at first, thought it would pass. But, it progressed to having me under the covers, coughing every 5th second, and hacking like a grandpa when he needed to leave the smokes alone but was not “trine to hear that.” Needless to say, I’m back with self-care lessons to share with you! Did ya miss me?! I missed you, sweet sister! So much to say and do! Let’s dig in.
“It’s Been a Long Time. I Shouldn’t Have Left You Without a Dope Beat to step to …” -Timbaland (and also Me)
How I Learned to Prioritize My Self Care
So chile, It was a rough two weeks. If you have followed me long, you know I generally crank out 3-5 posts across my social media platforms a week all in the name of helping us single moms all move forward raising our babies in these trenches called life. Well, with this cold, the spirit was willing but the body was like “Heck nawl!” And then my body said, “Sat down!” It did not say sit. Lol! “Sat.” It said, “Sat.” So, I listened. I’m so glad I did. I needed it.
Okay! So, the point of this post is… and there is a point. Yes sis, we should chase our dreams, lead our families like we’ve just been named The Queen of Zamunda, and crush every goal we have. But we must also mix in rest, common sense, and self-care.
Listen, I’m the poster child for the Energizer Bunny. I push and push myself because I like to be excellent. That’s good when you aren’t leading Team “Doing Too Much” already. But this time, life pushed back. And guess what? I listened. Daily. Even hourly all I wanted to do was write to you. Share some idea, tip, epiphany that came to me. But my body said… Yep, You guessed it! “Sat yo blankety-blank-blank down.” (Okay life. Gosh! I’m listening.)
Why Self Care Matters
Taking time to repair my body has allowed me to get clear on where I want to take KaywandaLamb.com, Spanishforsmallbusiness.com, and my nonprofit and in that time, I was able to think of ways that I can better serve you. That’s the point. Right? The mission. The purpose. I know that I have gifts and talent that I’m to share with the world with you. I also know Rome was not built in a day. So, if you’ve been team doing too much, set some 90 day goals to 1 year goals and stick to them.
But, real talk, taking care of myself as a single mom comes first before any dream, goal, passion, or purpose. Reality has sunk in. I am the only provider in this family. If I get down, we all are down. Make sense? I’m sure it’s the same for you. So sis keep reading because I have some tools to help.
If something happens to you, what happens to the kids? If you fall ill, how much savings do you have? Who can help you with the kids? All of these are questions I want you to ask yourself and then I want you to answer them by making a plan.
Januart is the month where everyone writes their goals for the year. That’s good. I believe in doing that, and I write about it here a lot on “le blog.” But, I also want you to devise a “If I get sick, what will I do” plan. I got you sis! Use the one below.
SelfCare and Life Plan for Single Moms
What you should do about self care
It won’t be easy, but you and I have got to learn to build in more breaks often and to listen to our mind, body, and spirit when we know we need rest. Many of us are Alpha females. Maybe we’re firstborns or life made us kicka$$ boss babes. The point is we do have limits, and we need to respect them. When you are rested, prepared for the ups and downs of life, you can pivot and maneuver better. It’s great to earn a living and to provide for our kids. It’s also good to enjoy the fruit of that labor WITH our kids. Not under the covers exhausted from saving the world. (Maybe I was talking to myself again there, but you feel me. Right?)

Awww! Thank you Dawn! So kind of you! It is my pleasure. My message to women and single moms is we can be Warrior Princesses another time. Our bodies need rest and we have to know when to say “when.” So glad you liked it!!! I have a hard time quitting, but the body knows. Lol! It knows!
