Hey mamas! I’m going deep today. Today, I want to remember all the women who have impacted me. I invite you to do the same. In honor of Women’s History Month, I want to give a huge shout out to the sheroes of my life. They made me who I am, encouraged me on my journey, and have been there for me when it mattered most.
We spend a lot of time remembering current and past sheroes who’ve made a difference in our world. (I wouldn’t have it any other way) But, let’s take some time and acknowledge our personal women heroes (aka sheroes).
Where I am now wasn’t the plan. I mean a single mom! Me? Trust me, no one thought that would be my state.
Maybe you feel like that, too. Let me assure you that you still will achieve all you started out to do. You’ll just do it on a different path. I mean my life now is amazing. It’s not perfect, it’s certainly been hard and stormy, but I love it. I didn’t plan to have kids or go into teaching or write a book or be a single mom coach. But life … it happened. And sis, I’m so glad it did.
I have come to find that the twists and turns on my journey were highlighted by courageous loving women. Women who poured into me, guided me, and encouraged me. This post is for them.
My Grandmother Therestha
When you look for a picture of a matriarch, you ought to be able to find my grandmother. I called her Madea just like her 12 kids. She was just what a granny should be- kind, giving, strong, supportive, stern, didn’t take any mess, full of faith, big and soft, and a woman who supported other women.
She impacted me so much that I wrote about her in my new book and I reference quotes from her often (which are now mine). Imperfect, beautiful, a survivor. Salute to my Big Mama and my Madea.
This lady made it through life with a third grade education. She raised 12 kids and countless grans. It was her simple encouragement “You can be anything you want to be” … That I never forgot. When life was hard (and it was as a young single mom), her words and faith in me propelled me forward.
Sis, hug your granny today and kiss her if you still can. They are the stuff courage is made of.
My Bestfriend in Life and Birth Stephanie
From getting whippings together to rooming in college to being pregnant together, to raising our kids as best buds there isn’t much she and I haven’t gone through together. I admire this chica because she has always been the embodiment of strength.
When I’ve been down, she’s been there. Like always! I remember once not having food to last two weeks til payday as a young mom. Bills were paid, roof over our heads but I would soon be needing groceries and well, I was single. You know what? It took all I had to say I needed help. She said meet me at the store, took me shopping and that was that. She didn’t fuss. She didn’t ask why or how this happened. She knew I handled my business and if I voiced it, I must have needed it.
In that moment, she just helped. We all deserve friends that meet us with love and no scolding. I had her back, too. But she is my Ace. My sis from another Mrs. and I’m proud to be her bestie and double cousing (yeah, our moms and dads are siblings).
I have more women I can list. Do you? I think I’ll write about more ladies that inspire me this week. I’m not writing because it’s Women History Month, but because it’s just good to say, “I love you.” Let’s all be someone a woman can look to and say “You are my sheroe. Thank you.”
May you be inspired to push through any and everything you’re dealing with today. You can overcome! You can make it!
Who’s on your list? Drop me a comment and let me know!
Do It Anyway!
