The Background Story
When I was a kid, I loved watching House of Style with Mrs. Cindy Crawford and her Super Model friends. Any mention of Naomi Campbell, Christy Burlington, Kimora Lee, and/or Tyra Banks on MTV I was glued to the screen. And as I watched in awe, my only thought was ‘Don’t anybody ask me nada.’ Fashion and modeling was my dream. ‘How could a poor girl from Winnsboro, La ever be a model?’ That’s the script that played in my head. I was poor, a nerd, and folks called me skinny. So, with the “not being good enough” complex in tow, I passed on the dream. (We now know skinny is the prereq for modeling, but anyway).
If you never get anything else from me, I hope this resonates: Be willing to bet on you and chase your dreams. I am far from the shy 18-year old I used to be. I have learned to chase my dreams. My strong belief in purpose, passion, and the pursuit of the God-given dreams placed in us long ago has made me strive for the best. I also believe in fulfilling them all. After all, my motto is #doitanyway.
(If you just found me, you can read up on me.) And, heeyyy!
But really, life tries it. It can stamp out a dream as soon as it begins. Amazingly enough, God brings some dreams back around. Know this: When they come back to you, pursue them with all you got!
Why It Matters to Chase Your Dreams
Fast forward 20 years and voila! Yesterday, I had the pleasure of modeling for my friend and fashionpreneur Leah Frazier as she discussed fall trends on Good Morning Texas. Check her out here or @TheLeahFrazier. She has a flair for fashion and is one to watch! Her generosity of spirit and knowledge of fashion is thebomb.com. So yeah, she rocks!
A few weeks ago, I jokingly said to Leah, “If you ever need a model…?” Who knew my day would come?! They say “be careful what you wish for”. I’m so glad I wished, joked, waited forever and a day/secretly hoped for this opportunity. 🙂
The morning of, I was so nervous to be on TV! Everyone at the station was so nice. I was shown where to stand and given tips on how to walk out, so my nerves subsided. I know it takes a lot to run a show! But chile, so much goes on behind the scenes. It is really amazing how much happens in milliseconds. Shout out to WFAA Channel 8 @wfaachannel8! Great job!
One word about the entire process- fulfilling. It was amazing to chase a dream I’d secretly held for a loooong time and strike a pose or two. Did you know it was my first time? Woo! Single Moms Rock! Yes, we do!
Don’t get me wrong. I had a blast! But, the best part was watching the replay at home with my boys, Syon and Kamron. They were hollering, “Look at mama!” I was so proud. (You know they think TV is like IT.) Hahahaha! I do, too.
The Point
I know it may look like today’s post is all about me enjoying the moment, and you would be correct. But, I hope you can see how your dreams, no matter how dormant they may be, can still be a reality. And I mean, any dream.
Watch on and sashay with me and the two other models as we show you how to werk honey!
Didn’t we rock and show off Dallas fashion! I was so proud of the 3 bloggers and models. Dallas really is a central hub for wonderful fashion. We have our way of doing things here in the South, but we know fashion. As you heard on the segment, be sure to check out Le Diner en blanc– the all-white party coming this fall. It is sure to be an interesting evening and I am all about fashion, culture, and connecting.
Glowing and still smiling, I leave you with this:
Chase every dream your heart possesses.
You never know what the future holds. Hopefully like me, you’ll shake off the nerves and…
Do It Anyway!
P.S.
Single moms, I’ll be hosting events designed with you in mind. I want to see you soar, rise, live. You need you to see that, too. Go on girl! Get up, get out, and live! So, let’s stay connected.
